VARIABLE STARS ODESSA-2005

Study of pulsating and eruptive variable stars is one of the priority scientific directions that are continuously developed by the Astronomical observatory of Odessa national University. This scientific direction was founded by Prof. V.P. Tsessevich in the early twenties and immediately attracted many specialists who were interested in variable stars. Nowadays, in the beginning of the new century, Astronomical observatory of Odessa national University can be really proud of its achievements in this area of astrophysics.

The tradition to organize the conferences on variable stars was first established in 1980. Since 1997 such conferences have gained the status of international ones. Normally, the conferences on variable stars are held each four years. The two last conferences were organized in 1997 and 2001, and both have been devoted to the memory of Prof. V.P. Tsessevich.

The next conference is scheduled for August 2005, and it is believed that this conference will provide a wide exchange of views concerning the current problems in the domain of pulsating and eruptive variable stars:
β Cep, δ Sct, roAp, RR Lyr, δ Cep, W Vir, SX Phe, λ Boo, RV Tau, SRabcd, o Cet, UV Cet, U Gem, Z Cam, R CrB, Ne, SNe.

In particular, the following topics are planned to be discussed:

• Photoelectric and spectroscopic observations;
• Frequency analysis and period changes;
• Chemical composition and evolutionary status;
• Theoretical models and their observational predictions;
• Mechanisms of the flares;
• SNe nucleosynthesis;
• Using variable stars for distance calibration.

The forthcoming conference Variable Stars 2005 will be held in period 22-28 August, 2005 at the Lustdorf campus (Chernomorka) of Odessa national University.
